Sunday night, two English girls arrived - age 15. They're rather adorable, but... don't speak much French. Hence, my role of the week began = TRANSLATOR. It's been a little rough having them here, but fun as well. They don't eat very much and hence end up wasting food, they leave the water running in the shower, and they send 45 minutes in the morning doing make up (monopolizing the bathroom). None of these things would bother me, if they didn't drive Bérengère insane. She talks to me endlessly about them...
Monday there was class and afterward I tried to look for a computer case and ended up with a shirt and a dress... whoops. But I did get to talk with my parents! That was really nice. Tuesday there was class and I actually had my conversation class that day too since Wednesday was a holiday.
My Bastille Day celebrations started Tuesday night. There was a ball in my "Quartier" and 3 of my classmates came to join me for it. So it was me, 3 girls from school (Canada, England, and New Zealand), and the two English girls that are staying with me. So in total we had 6 anglophones who doubled the population of 15-25 yr olds present at the event. We actually had a lot of fun dancing for 2 hours to a live band.
Wednesday I went on an excursion with my school. We went to Aveyron (a small medieval town) and I ate their traditional cheesy potato dish with an amazing sausage for lunch (Saucisse Aligot). Afterward we went and saw a famous bridge called Vidiac de Millau. Then, before heading home we did a tour of the caves of Roquefort. Yeah, that's right the cheese - I had a tour of where all Roquefort cheese is refined and matured... and there was a free dégustation at the end of the whole thing. And yes - I tried the cheese. No - I did not like it. The excursion didn't impress me overly much, but was an interesting way to pass the day.
I watched the fireworks on the beach with Bérengère and the 2 English girls. They weren't as impressive as those of Grenoble. I think it's because they lacked the doomsday music. They did have a cool new firework - the screaming tadpole (however the first impression I had was Dementors from Harry Potter - and hence they scared me a little). They ended up being the coolest firework though and hence my favorite of the evening.
Thursday... there was class... I did not attend however. Bérengère convinced me to ditch (the first time I think I've ever done that) and go to Spain with her for the day. So, I went back to Escala for the day and met more of her family who was visiting. I had amazing food once again. My favorite dish was the muscles cooked in garlic and escargot butter and probably a few other herbs - delicious. I showed the Puzzle website to Raymond, one of the sisters, and I couldn't explain to her that the pieces with the straight edges - went on the sides. The 12 year old next to me understood me, so it wasn't me failing in my French... Once we got back here I watched the second Michelle Mercier movie, which sadly was not as good as the first.
Friday my teachers caught me up on what I missed the day before and thought it was very good that I took advantage of the opportunity to go to Spain for the day rather than class. lol! I had lunch in a park and then took a few pictures of the area before running a few errands. In the evening I went out to the Estivals again and had a nice evening talking with fellow French learners and some of the professeurs from the school.
Today I went to the beach and read my book. I am less sunburned than expected, but a little burnt here and there never the less. It was a very relaxing afternoon though!
