I learned a lot about one of them – it really changes your prospective on things. He is from Pakistan, but three years ago he was moved to France. It seemed a lot like he didn’t have a choice in the matter as he has no family. During the week, he lives in the dorm where I do, but on the weekends he goes “home” to Metz where he lives in a Foyer for minors, which is like a prison… He can’t go out and has to always stay in his room. He does get an allowance, but it isn’t much and he can’t really go out to spend it. So, for him, living here in the dorm is really nice since the students here have a little more freedom. Adversely, he is the top student at his school because he spends most of his time studying. I knew that many of the students are in difficult situations, but this still caught me off guard.
Friday night, Lauren (the assistant I travel with occasionally) and I went out to a Salsa Bar that she had heard about. At first we were a bit nervous since it seemed like most people were decently couple-y, but eventually one of the men came over and asked Lauren to dance (probably cause we were clearly watching the dancing and wanting to join in). Lauren actually has a lot of experience dancing and was very good.
I… on the other hand, have no experience. Another man came over and asked me to dance so I wasn’t sitting alone. I felt rather bad since I was such a bad dancer; as in, I really did poorly. Despite my lack of dance skills, the man came back after a little and taught me a simple dance step, which I started to catch on to eventually.
Lauren danced the entire night with the same guy who was really good. I got to dance with a number of different people and do all sorts of dances. I particularly liked swing. It was a VERY fun evening, but after 3 hours of dancing, I sure was tired!
Here’s a photo of me dressed to go out dancing and trying to show off the bag I hand-sewed during the month of January.
And a close up of the strap….
Saturday night, Lauren and I went to our theater show, “Quartett,” after a yummy sushi dinner. The show was quite interesting and not something I would have intentionally bought tickets for if I had known what the show was going to be like. However, once I got past the fact that the actress’s costume was a G-string and a full-body wrapping of saran wrap – I did enjoy the show and did appreciate it. It was definitely something interesting and different!
Sunday morning was the huge Metz flea market. Lauren and I caught the bus to the exposition building where it was taking place and even had to pay admission! It was interesting and huge!!!
This was just one of the rooms for the flea market.
There were lots of different things.
Just look at this lamp!
In case people got hungry there were some “food stands”
We took the afternoon easy and saw a movie before catching our trains back.
