First week at my new English Teaching Assistant job

Monday, October 1st

My school is in a completely different location than my parents and I thought it was!  Google was way off on the address/map.  Instead of being a 15 minute walk from the station, it is about a 3 minute walk!  (I sure got lucky for the year; some students have 15 minute jogs to school from the end of a line...)  It did take me about 30 minutes to officially find the school, but I had allotted a lot of extra time so I wouldn’t be late.

Throughout the day, I met the 6/7 English teachers working there and stood in front of 6 classes, a total of 5 hours, and answered questions about America and myself.  It was EXHAUSTING.  All the teachers seem nice, but a little frazzled by my arrival, as most didn’t know I was coming at all.

I was at the school for a total of 8 hours on Monday, between going to classes, meeting people, and getting to sit for a few minutes.  Then, I rushed off to my NYU class…  I had enough time to print my documents to turn in and have a small snack.  Then it was time for 2.5 hours of class, including my first presentation of the week.

To say the least, I was exhausted when I got home…

Tuesday, October 2nd

Tuesday was much the same as Monday as far as work went.  I went to five more hours of class…  The teachers are working on creating a schedule for me, but it is taking some time.  I was told I didn’t need to come in until next week on Monday!

After a 7 hours at the high school, off I went to my class.  I gave my presentation on Danton, a film about the French revolution.  It seemed to go pretty well, but I do get a little leeway as I did volunteer to do the first presentation when no one wanted to do it.

Then it was off to Photography Club!  I will always be arriving at least 30 minutes late because of my Tuesday class, but that shouldn’t be a problem.  For about the first hour of the meeting, I was pretty sure I was in the wrong place – this was by far not a club for me.  Turns out, it might be amazing.  I am one of the few people who hasn’t taken photography classes, but that isn’t a requirement.  We’re going to hopefully pick a theme (I’m hoping “Paris inspired by literature” or something like that) and all work on the theme this semester and have an exhibit in December.  Last week, we had a homework assignment; we had to turn in a photo that answered the question, “What do you see in the mirror?” – from my photo, the professor was positive I’d had photography lessons!

I got back to my place late again and completely tuckered out!

Wednesday, October 3rd

I went to my TAPIF orientation with one of my NYU classmates.  It was mostly pointless, as expected.  Luckily we didn’t have to stay for the whole thing because it conflicted with our NYU classes.  We actually headed out a smidgeon early so we could have a decent lunch before class.

Class went pretty well, it’s hard to tell with the professor.  A lot of the expectations still seem pretty jumbled, but everyone is confused a bit – we’re working together to keep everything straight.  After class, I stuck around NYU and watched the first half of the film for class next week.  Yes I said half – only the first 115 minutes of the silent film about Napoleon…

I finished off the day with having dinner with Uncle Scot and Luan one last time before they were heading off!  We had a pleasant evening, but once again, I was exhausted!

Thursday, October 4th

Nothing seemed to go right on Thursday.
-       I went to NYU early to watch the second 2 hours of Napoleon, but people had taken both copies the night before and therefore I could not watch the film…
-       I checked my email around 10am, and found out that the high school needed me at 12:30…  and fully expected me to be there.  I could not stay at NYU and wait for the film to arrive and watch it as soon as it got there.
-       Going to the one 1hr class at the high school took 3 hours out of my day…  Three hours that were intended for homework and studying.
-       At work, they wanted to come in on Friday too…  I gave them the impression that I am unavailable on Fridays (when I first met them) because of school trips (which are on Fridays) and other school obligations (like watching the film for my film class and meetings).  This particular Friday is a school trip…  I was so frustrated!  Upon me saying, that I can skip the trip the next day and come in – they insisted that I go on the trip.

After that, things started to perk up a bit.  I at least finished the hw for that day before class and headed off to class with the rest of the graduate students, all of us exhausted.

As it was Thursday – that meant it was my last class of the week, which, in turn, meant that I laughed so hard I cried in class.  The teacher is that fun.  He was doing massively exaggerated pronunciations to help us with the letter “R” in French.  He wouldn’t so much exaggerate the sounds as he exaggerated his mouth movements to help demonstrate what we need to do!

I got back to my place around 8!  So much earlier than all week!  I had a wonderful evening.  How a wonderful evening consists of laundry, pasta, and grammar is beyond me, but it was great to be home before I fell over from being so tired!
