First Escapade! Oct. 8th

Today was my first adventure… and I went to GERMANY. Specifically, I went to Saarbrücken (every time I pronounce the –en, which I was taught to do in German, ppl correct me and say it without the –en). I took the 9:06 bus from just in front of Françoise’s house and 45 minutes later, I was at the Saarbrücken train station.

I spent the day walking around the town and trying to go to all the places marked on my tourist map; a task in which I had much success. I saw a number of churches and many little outdoor markets. The map also had a few odd things on it (the Congress Hall, a random street where there appears to be nothing), but I thought there must be a reason for them, so I went anyway – some were not worth it.

I really started to enjoy myself when I got to the Castle, of which only the outer wall might be considered castle-like. The gardens were pretty and I always love old stonewalls… When I went inside, I found a lot of the doors were locked so I sadly couldn’t go inside the church that was attached to the castle. The inside was extremely modern to the point that I’m not sure it is actually related to the wall that surrounds it.

On the street below the castle was completely blocked off for a MARCHÉ AUX PUCES!!!! (flea market). I found a vase I liked a lot, but, sadly, on closer inspection it was cracked. I did buy something there though… isn’t it awesome!!?

It’s a small photo/paper holder. The photo is a mirror image so the writing is backwards, but is says “Rotkäppchen” or “Little Red Ridinghood”!!! I was so excited. It’ll help decorate my desk and we did study it a fair bit in my German class. 10 centimes well spent if you ask me, even if no one here seems to understand my excitement over my find.

I had lunch in a small popular restaurant (I’m saying it was popular since it was the busiest one). I had a regional specialty, Gegrillter Lyoner mit Bratkartoffel und Salat. It was a bit like the photo below, but with a very large salad, a glob of mustard, and a fraction of what I now believe to be giant hot-dog.

It was alright. It didn’t impress me much. Everything tasted better when I ate it with the mustard they put on my plate. It just didn’t leave me begging for more.

During the afternoon I wandered around stores a little – Saarbrücken is apparently the place to shop. It was like a mall that went on for blocks. Really there was a mall right next to the train station, but then right next to it were blocks of big stores (most of which, were in the mall…). The bus home literally dropped me off on Françoise’s driveway just after 17h. Perfect.

If you exclude my ear-warming headband and my heel-less boots (and I didn’t notice if other ppl were wearing gloves like I was), I was dressed much like everyone else, which was cool. I didn’t exactly scream tourist. Today was, however, I have been told, just a little chilly, not cold (9°C, overcast, drizzling, with some wind – internet says it felt like 6°C) – I was wearing my warmest sweater and then my cardigan and them my fleece vest and then my trench coat. I was fairly confortable – my nose was not; it was cold. All of this means – I am not prepared for the cold (for those who didn’t watch me pack my suitcase – I was wearing 3 of my 4 jackets at once with a warm shirt). I should have brought the giant winter coat - which wasn’t even possible since it literally would have taken up half of my big suitcase. I’ll just have to borrow something from Françoise or buy something…
