Got to my hostel quite easily! NO SIGNS OF SNOW. My bus to Saarebruck was on time and so was my train to Heidelberg! My hostel was right next to the train station, which was pretty nice, except it’s a minimum of at 20 minute walk to hit the beginning of downtown Heidelberg.
I spent the evening visiting the shops in downtown. I stopped in a café and had a “HotchocSpoon,” which is a wooden spoon with a chunk of chocolate on the end (they have over 50 different varieties!, some with milk chocolate and some with dark, and even some with alcohol). You pick out which one you want, and then they give you a cup of hot milk and you put the spoon in and make your hot chocolate! It was cool and very yummy.
At dinner, I discovered that their translation of “meatloaf” has nothing to do with our meatloaf – it was like a square chunk of ham-like meat – but good.
Castles and Philosophers – Friday, Nov. 11th
This morning I went to the Heidelberg Schloß and saw its terrace with a view of the city, it’s pharmacy museum, and it’s famous beer barrel – the largest ever – there were stairs to walk around it. I also visited the gardens of the castle.
At lunch, I interrupted the guys next to me to ask where they were from… a mix between Pittsburg and Indiana and all studying German in Freiberg for the moment (on a weekend trip to Heidelberg). At lunch, I thought I was ordering something like a hamburger… but got meatballs over rice, which was quite yummy.
After lunch, I hiked up to the Philosophers’ Path where, traditionally philosophers and professors would go to walk and talk about abstract theories… I walked and took pictures back across the river at the castle and downtown instead.
I stopped in to a café to have a “Scheeball” (snowball) which is basically a cookie ball with different coatings – I had one with a powder sugar coating.
